What is Parvovirus?

Parvovirus is a highly contagious and potentially fatal disease in puppies and unvaccinated dogs.

How is Parvovirus spread?

Parvovirus is spread through faeces of an infected animal. Dogs easily come into contact with the virus when sniffing the ground on walks or in high-traffic areas, like dog parks.

Symptoms to look out for:

Loss of appetite
Lethargy
Abdominal bloating and pain
Vomiting
Diarrhoea
Changing body temperature

Is there a cure?

Unfortunately, there isn’t a specific cure for Parvovirus. Puppies typically receive a series of vaccinations within the first 16 weeks.

Additional measures to protect your pet.

  • Promptly dispose of faeces on walks to reduce environmental contamination
  • Regularly wash bedding and food/water dishes until your dog is vaccinated
  • Follow a vaccination schedule as discussed with your vet
  • Avoid walking your puppy in parks and outside your home until they receive their full series of puppy vaccines.

If you have any concerns, please contact your vet.
