As we jump into the cooler months of the year, it’s important to consider the furry, feathered and scaly friends in our life, particularly those who are based outside. There are a few things that you can do to ensure your outdoor animals remain cared for, comfortable and safe during the winter months.
As we jump into the cooler months of the year, it’s important to consider the furry, feathered and scaly friends in our life, particularly those who are based outside. There are a few things that you can do to ensure your outdoor animals remain cared for, comfortable and safe.

The first and most important thing to do for your outdoor pet, is provide them with a sheltered space to keep themselves warm, safe and dry.
For dogs, this may look like a kennel, which offers protection from both wind and rain. A kennel should be big enough for your dog to lie down, stand up, and turn around in, but any larger than necessary will minimise the ability for your pup to keep warm. For additional warmth and comfort, fitting their kennel with a dog bed and/or blanket will provide added comfort and heat.
Rabbits, guinea pigs and other small animals should also be provided with a space to seek shelter. This most often takes form in an outdoor hutch. An additional way to help insulate your small animal’s environment is by placing towels or blankets over the roof or exterior walls of the enclosure at night. It is also beneficial to ensure they have access to plenty of hay as it is not only a part of their diet but acts as the perfect insulator for your small animal.
Ensure all shelters are kept in a protected location out of wind and rain to best shield your pet.
Just like in the warmer months, it is crucial that your pet remains hydrated to stay healthy. Fresh, clean drinking water should always be provided in large enough quantities to cater for the time that you will be away from the home and unable to refill. Depending on where you are located, you may even need to check this regularly in the mornings to ensure it has not frozen over! Where possible, provide your pet with water that isn’t too chilly to help encourage them to drink.
Some small animals such as rabbits and guinea pigs are pack animals and need companions. Having two or more guinea pigs and rabbits is essential during the winter months as they can snuggle together to keep warm.

Outdoor pets will burn more calories during the winter than indoor pets because they have to expend extra energy to keep themselves warm. To account for this, consider increasing the amount they are fed at their regular meals, and guarantee they are getting the nutrients they need to keep themselves healthy.
There are many other ways to help prepare your outdoor pet this winter, including providing a raised bed to keep them off the ground or fitting your dog with a jacket to keep them warm. Ensure you show them all the love this wintertime.
